Roadmap to Country

Roadmap to Country was a pilot project conducted in 2009 to develop a training programme to support small business development in the Indigenous communities of Doomadgee and Kubin on Moa Island, Torres Strait. This pilot programme focused on capacity building in the communities' tourism industry. This project focused on skills and knowledge development that will lead to sustainable employment through the development of sustainable new enterprises.

Eleven participants undertook training in Doomadgee. Through training, participants were able to develop basic feasibility/business case reports resulting in seven applications for assistance to Indigenous Business Australia to progress business concepts further.

Seven participants undertook training in Kubin. Participants were encouraged through training to work outside of their normal environment and engage in a different level of thought. It helped to discover the world of tourism, what this meant for their community and identify a number of potential tourism opportunities.

We have also developed an online resource to assist training providers, Indigenous communities and other stakeholders interested in replicating the training programme and initiatives.
